The Anatomy of a High-Summer Wildflower Aesthetic (And how to extend your flowers vase-life)
There is something completely magical about a high-summer Irish garden when it’s in full, unruly bloom. It’s wild, it's effortless, and it looks like a living watercolour painting.
Lately, everyone wants to bring that exact "just-picked-from-a-meadow" aesthetic inside. But if you’ve ever gathered a bunch of actual wildflowers from a field—or bought a plastic-wrapped "meadow mix" from a supermarket—you’ve probably noticed they tend to drop their petals and look a little sad on your kitchen counter within about 72 hours.
At The Crate, we are completely obsessed with the summer wildflower look, but we build it to last. Our founder, Claire Ryan, engineered our curated weekly concept to give you that untamed, design-led look using premium artisan blooms that always survive the week.
Here is exactly how we break down the anatomy of a perfect high-summer bunch in our Bray flower studio.
The Three Ingredients of a Modern Wildflower Bunch
We don’t do dense, round, tightly packed bouquets. To get that airy, meadow-like movement, our design team curates a delicate balance of three specific stem types every single week:
1. The Heavy Hitters (Focal Blooms)
Every wild arrangement needs an anchor so your eyes know where to land. Right now, we’re opting for breathtaking, premium focal stems like garden roses, fluffy Gardenia-pink peonies, or frilled Solomio gerberas.
2. The Cloud-Like Fillers (Texture)
This is where the magic happens. To give a bouquet that true "meadow" character, we weave in frothy, cloud-like filler textures. Our current studio favourite is Alchemilla (traditionally known as Lady's Mantle). With its tiny clusters of chartreuse green-yellow flowers, it acts as a stunning, wild canvas that makes our primary pinks and creams completely pop.
3. The Dancing Stems (Movement)
A true wildflower arrangement needs to breathe. We intentionally layer in stems that shoot upwards or drape out at unexpected angles—think sweet-scented stock flowers, structural delphinium, or delicate seed pods. This ensures that when the breeze hits your kitchen window, your flowers actually move naturally.
Fresh From the Market, Zero Waste
The real secret to why our flowers last so much longer than the high-street alternative comes down to our low-waste philosophy.
Because we design just one spectacular arrangement every single week, we don’t have buckets of old inventory sitting around a shop waiting to be picked. We buy our stems directly from our trusted growers based on exactly how many orders you place, condition them perfectly in our flower studio, and ship them straight to your door. This happens three times a week to ensure maximum freshness! Less time in transit means days of extra life in your vase.

Learn How To Care for Summer Dahlias and Peonies
What are the best vase care and conditioning tips to maximize the life of summer dahlias and peonies?
When it comes to high-summer showstoppers, Dahlias and Peonies are the absolute royalty of the flower world. But because they are so lush and heavy-headed, they can be a bit temperamental if they aren’t treated right.
To help you get the absolute maximum life out of these premium summer stems, here is our ultimate insider guide to conditioning them like a pro.
1. Bleach-Clean Your Vase First
Bacterial buildup is the number one killer of cut flowers, especially for fleshy summer stems. Before you even think about adding water, scrub your vase with warm water and a splash of bleach or soap. If you wouldn't drink out of it, don't make your flowers drink out of it!
2. Strip the Lower Foliage
Peonies and dahlias have gorgeous leaves, but any foliage submerged below the waterline will rot, create bacteria, and clog the stems. Strip away all lower leaves so the stem can direct 100% of its energy and water straight up to the heavy flower head.
3. The 45-Degree Angle Snip
Using a sharp pair of clean floral snips (never blunt kitchen scissors, which crush the vascular channels), trim at least half an inch off the bottom of the stems at a sharp, 45-degree angle. This increases the surface area for drinking and stops the stem from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase.
4. Give Dahlias the "Hot Water Jumpstart"
Dahlias have hollow stems, which makes them prone to getting tiny air bubbles trapped inside that block water flow. Professional growers use a trick called "hot conditioning": place the freshly snipped dahlia stems into 2-3 inches of very warm-to-hot water (around 160°F / 70°C—like a hot tea, not boiling). Leave them there for an hour as the water cools to room temperature to force out air bubbles and hyper-hydrate the blooms.
5. Give Peonies "The Marshmallow Test"
If you buy or harvest peonies, look for buds that are at the "marshmallow stage"—meaning they are showing a hint of colour and feel slightly soft when gently squeezed. If you cut them when they are rock-hard, they may never open; if they are already wide open, they will only last a few days.
6. Wash Off the Peony "Sugar Coat"
Ever notice ants crawling all over outdoor peonies? They are after the sticky, sweet sap the bud secretes. Sometimes, this sap hardens and glues the petals shut. If a peony bud is struggling to open, gently wipe the bud with a warm, damp cloth or rinse it under a stream of lukewarm tap water to dissolve the sugar layer.
7. Change the Water Every Single Day
Dahlias are incredibly thirsty, and both stems create a lot of organic waste in the water. For the ultimate longevity, empty the vase, rinse it out, and fill it with fresh, cool water every 24 to 48 hours.
8. Re-Trim the Stems with Every Water Change
Every time you refresh the water, give the stems another quick half-inch trim. This opens up fresh, unblocked plant tissue so they can keep drinking efficiently.
9. Keep Stems on the Shorter Side
Because dahlia and peony blooms are incredibly heavy, display them on the shorter side. Cutting the stems so the flower heads sit closer to the lip of the vase provides structural support to prevent drooping and shortens the distance water has to travel to reach the petals.
10. Avoid the Sun and the Fruit Bowl
Keep your completed arrangement in a cool spot completely out of direct sunlight and away from heating vents. Crucially, keep them away from your kitchen fruit bowl. Ripening fruit (especially bananas and avocados) releases ethylene gas, an invisible, odourless aging hormone that will cause your beautiful petals to drop prematurely.
